I had to try my hand at stand-up paddle boarding. I rented a board and paddle and spent the afternoon fighting with it. The boards are huge and wide, much bigger than a large surfboard. I was able to stand and paddle but not for much more than 30 seconds. I was much better in the kneeling position and managed some magnificently long rides. For a while I tossed the paddle on the beach and just used it as a surfboard. There are some interesting features of riding waves in Hawaii. In Maine you’ve got some nice soft beach sand along the shore and under the water. In Hawaii, you end up in places where there’s nothing but sharp coral under about 2 feet of water. You actually have to either jump off before it gets too shallow or fall spread eagle like so you don’t mess yourself up on the coral. I learned that the hard way the first run in when I saw the bottom come up fast at the end of the run. I was able to land mostly on the board but my feet got a little scraped up. Overall it was fun, but again exhausting.
The end of the day was celebrated under yet another absolutely glorious sunset. With the most simple of cameras everyone is a professional photographer, you just aim and shoot and you’ve got a masterpiece.
Had a nice pasta dinner, walked the shops in Lahaina, for the tenth time went back to the hotel, used the computer a bit and went to bed.
