My mission was Silver Lake, in Wrangell St Elias National Park, a four hour drive north and then east on the Glen Highway. I’m immediately reminded of the insane beauty of Alaska as the drive passes tremendous snow covered peaks and ice blue glaciers….
Ever drive in a place that gets zero radio stations? Well there’s a fun game you can play with yourself and other passengers. You hit scan on the radio and turn the volume up full blast…..the radio quietly scans for an hour or two until you near civilization an then…..BLAM!, full volume static and noise. It scares the crap out of you every time because you forget you were even playing in the first place. During the moment of explosion one’s immediate thoughts range from…..Holy crap something wrong with the car to avalanche, or huge truck bearing down on you or who knows….the mind reacts differently every time. Once you’re over it, you’re a much safer driver because your adrenaline is pumping and are wildly alert. If you find yourself in the middle of nowhere, try it sometime, you’ll like it. Maybe if you’re over eighty years of age it’s not such a good idea.
To get to Silver Lake you drive to Chitina, which is in the middle of nowhere and then you just keep on driving. This was the lake that I caught the largest rainbow trout of my life last year……and I’d waited 364 days since then to get back here. Using my float tube and fins, Silver did not disappoint. First fish was 18 inches and the action was consistent for the rest of the day….The walk out in the half light is always a spookfest…you never really know what’s around the next corner, freaky locals, bears....... and your happy to be alive when your bum hits the front seat and the door is shut.
Drove back to Chitina and had a great meal of alfredo in the few buildings in the village before the Ford Taurus bed.
