Met the legend Ed and we hit the flats in search of the elusive bonefish. People hire Ed solely for his incredible eyesight. The guy can see fish in the coral filled shallows that no one else can. I saw many fish....and I occasionally fished for a particular fish that I couldn’t see at all. I was strictly following his commands…..which was strange to me. With no visual of the fish it was almost like he was catching the fish and just using me as a tool to do it….and interesting concept if you think about it. Almost like I was part of his fishing equipment, so to speak.
The flat we were fishing was right near the airport, and commercial jets and some crazy fighter jets were blasting overhead.
By days end I’d seen many fish, many fish had seen my fly, one had actually attempted to eat it...... but I just couldn’t hook one......skunk city. There’s always tremendous disappointment in that. I can say that bonefish Ed went way beyond the call of duty, staying out way longer than the prescribed half day, and giving it his all. He wanted me to succeed so bad, but there just weren’t enough fish around to catch. That’s why they call it fishing instead of catching I guess……heck your still knee deep in 80 degree water in Hawaii, it ain’t all bad.
After lunch I went for a swim in the ocean then decided to use the facilities of the $450 a night Waikikian Hotel….took a dip in the pool and fell asleep in a lounge chair.
Woke up around 7pm…in the lounge chair of the $450 a night Waikikian and decided to go for a walk around downtown Waikiki before bed. Still groggy, and in my weakened state, I was unable to resist the urge to purchase the white Nixon watch I’d been eyeballing for the last two weeks……heck, it’s a beauty, wait ‘til you see it. Bought some gifts for others and retired to the heap of crap known as my Volkswagen….she was parked oceanfront tonight….aaah, the gentle trade winds….
gorgeous sunsets! lots of beautiful things to see (mostly!).
ReplyDeleteI laughed out loud at your sunburn story above! We've all been there.
Take care and have fun.
